Secure your home, How blinds can help…
July 13, 2007 |
We all have concerns with our home security, the numbers are shocking, every 43 seconds a home is broken into. Last year alone, more than 733,000 homes in the country were targeted (based upon the British Crime Survey). That’s 2000 homes every day. Thieves know what to look for, when to hit, and what to take, but do you know how to keep them out? Blinds can play a part in helping make your home more secure and less of a target for thieves. Below are some quotes from leading security advice websites.
we suggest that you install blinds if you have open windows around your home. Many of these burglaries were due to people previously scouting out a house by looking through windows with either open blinds or no blinds. Once they see and determine there may be items of value, they target that house.
Many burglars like to see if there is anything worth stealing before they go through the trouble of breaking into a house. Closing your curtains, blinds or shades at night will deter burglars from looking in.
As you can see from the quotes above, the simple act of installing blinds and ensuring that they are closed when you are away from your property can help to make your home less of a target to opportunistic thieves. The UK government offers this advice;
Have a light timer and always use it on darker nights so it looks like you are in the house. Always make sure the curtains/blinds are closed so intruders cannot see you are not at home.
Blinds are preferable to curtains, especially wood or aluminium Venetian blinds. This is because closed curtains during the day can indicate an empty house, especially if the house is being watched. However Venetian blinds can be angled so they are not closed but they still prevent the interior being visible. If you use a light timer, then a little light will show through between the slats and this will again, give the impression that the home is occupied.
If you are concerned with making your home as secure as possible, as I am sure you are, then clicking on the various links and quotes above will take you to comprehensive step by step advice on the best measures to take.
